ZeroCO2 glass: on the way to CO2-neutral glass production

As part of the IPGR research project ZeroCO2-Glas, Wiegand-Glas is working with several partners from research, technology and industry on a pioneering project: the development of a new type of hydrogen-fired glass melting furnace that will enable the completely CO2-neutral production of container glass. Carbonate-free raw materials are to be used for the production of the glass batch. The glass melting furnace was developed in such a way that it can be operated as a hybrid furnace with hydrogen-oxy and natural gas-oxy firing as well as electric heating.
Heat-up of the prototype glass melting furnace has been completed
The melting furnace has now been installed, the equipment put into operation, the furnace has been heated up and the first bottles are being produced - a significant milestone in the project.
Together with our IPGR partners, RWTH Aachen University and Horn Glass Industries AG, we are taking pioneering steps towards sustainability and climate-neutral production with this project, which is funded by the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz (German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection). The combination of technical expertise, innovative approaches and clear climate targets makes it clear that our industry is actively facing the challenges of the future.
