Construction of the new glass plant in Schleusingen is progressing

The new plant includes two furnaces, a white glass furnace with 4 production lines for wide and narrow neck production and an amber furnace with 3 production lines for narrow neck production.

This is currently the largest construction project of the Wiegand-Glas group

Various buildings, production buildings, a batch house, a finished goods warehouse, a supply material warehouse, a bridge building, a 20KV switch house, a workshop building with a transition building and other smaller structures are being developed which are necessary for the operation of the two new furnaces and a total of 7 machines. After a long and not yet fully completed planning phase, the construction of the new plant with our general contractor Max Bögl started in October 2018. The major part of the plant technology for the operation of furnace 1 is planned, awarded and in production at the supplier. Detailed planning is in progress in the various specialist departments for execution, assembly and construction with neighbouring plant constructors.

Schedule and progress of construction

Construction is currently proceeding as per the jointly agreed schedule. Several structures have already been completed and handed over to us and our plant engineers in a visual inspection, such as the batch house floor slab, the west end retaining wall, the chimney foundation and batch bridge foundations. Construction progress can be seen every day. In the finished goods warehouse, the retaining walls, the cistern and also the pump room have been completed. Currently, prefabricated columns are being erected and cast in various axes. Work on retaining walls and the foundation is underway in the intake store and in the area of the bridge to the production building. The 20KV building is on schedule and should be completed in August as a shell construction.

Roof and facade work and more

In the cold end section of the production building, work on the roof and facade is underway, the roof is 2/3 complete including skylights, and work on the façade is halfway to completion. The shard channels under the cold end are being extended to prepare for the construction of the floor slab. The planned start for the installation of the cold end equipment is the beginning of November. In the hot end the basement rooms in the vicinity of furnace are finished and the ceiling slab is finished in the area of 3 machines, together with the furnace cut-out.

The first steel support was placed at the beginning of July to continue the work on the roof construction in the hot end. Various fixtures such as the furnace control room and various switch rooms are also being built. Initial installation work is beginning in the basement rooms. The first elements for shard return are being installed by our plant engineers parallel to the roof work. Plant construction is scheduled to start at the end of October with the call to start the steel construction by the furnace manufacturer.

The workshop and transition building is also going up. Here the basement is completed and the ground floor slab is growing. The various staircase and lift towers are being concreted or are already partly completed. At the same time, precast columns and floor slabs are being set and laid. The steelwork for the plant construction in the batch house is growing rapidly. Currently, the silos for small components are being set in the silo level and various plant components are being lifted onto the lower level and assembled. After the silo assembly is completed, the last level will be set up inside the steel structure. On the construction field, various works are in progress for the foundation construction for the filter system, lamella clarifier and cool water system as well as the works in the outside area, e.g. fillings, pipeline construction and traffic areas and paths.
